Breastfeeding enables babies to receive and absorb the best nutrients, and will help to prevent decay. If a breast-fed baby or child does have decay, the mother may not have enough nutrients in her breastmilk, and may need to take nutritional supplements and eat more nutritionally rich foods.
After the age of one, a child should not be put to bed at night or at naptime with a bottle unless it contains water only. Prolonged bottle feeding will increase the chance of early decay in a child’s teeth.
Cleansing the teeth and mouth must take place as soon as a tooth erupts. Using a soft, wet toothbrush, a parent can gently clean the teeth and the tongue. Cleansing the mouth for older children and adults needs to take place at least twice a day. Again using a soft toothbrush, brush the teeth and the tongue thoroughly. Cleaning below the gum line is essential with rubber tips, floss or water pik.
