- Breastfeeding enables babies to receive and absorb the best nutrients, and will help to prevent decay. If a breast-fed baby or child does have decay, the mother may not have enough nutrients in her breastmilk, and may need to take nutritional supplements and eat more nutritionally rich foods.
- After the age of one, a child should not be put to bed at night or at naptime with a bottle unless it contains water only. Prolonged bottle feeding will increase the chance of early decay in a child’s teeth.
- Cleansing the teeth and mouth must take place as soon as a tooth erupts. Using a soft, wet toothbrush, a parent can gently clean the teeth and the tongue. Cleansing the mouth for older children and adults needs to take place at least twice a day. Again using a soft toothbrush, brush the teeth and the tongue thoroughly. Cleaning below the gum line is essential with rubber tips, floss or water pik.
